National Health Care/ Housing Bubble

December 17, 2009

One of the raging debates going on in Washington is about health care. I was listening to good ole Glen Beck on the radio the other day and an unidentified health insurance agent said, “illegal immigrants are able to get health insurance by using their identification number from their homeland!” Also during the radio show an unidentified bank home loan officer stated exactly the same thing.

Now, I believe anyone who comes to this country contributing to the economic wealth, safety, and are law-abiding should have a chance. Many immigrants do jobs we americans believe we are too “good” to do. Without their work ethic and determination we would not be able to enjoy certain things we enjoy.

What makes it wrong for them to get health care, home loans and build a life in this country? Are we so pompous to believe we do not need them? Would it benefit our country to set up a realistic screening system to allow workers to stay in our country or do we stand by and watch thousands die as they attempt to sneak into our country?

Also on the radio show Glen Beck stated they were the reason why the housing bubble burst, because they weren’t able to afford the loan. When the loan officer attempted to correct him and say the immigrants made their payments on time and even ahead of time most of the time, he kept cutting her off. He spouted, “YOU SEE TEA BAGGERS, THIS IS THE REASON THE HOUSING CRUNCH HAPPENED. BANKS GIVING LOANS TO IMMIGRANTS!” The poor caller tried and tried to correct him and he finally cut her off and went on his usual rant.

It is proven we can not stop illegals from coming to the country right or wrong they are here.

What do we do now?

I don’t think it is selfish at all. A very good friend of mine, his wife has been diagnosed also with MS. A young lady I worked with was diagnosed the same. What I have a problem with is when your covered by an insurance company and you are diagnosed with any disease they attempt not to pay for it. What most of the American public don’t know is insurance companies will deny the first claim and sometimes up to two or three times. They rely on the person to give up and pay it on their own. If you stay on them they will do their job. They expect us not to do ours. My daughter has CP and my wife has became an expert with insurance companies and boy does she lay into them.
It should be this way, but as long as they have their lobbiest running our government we will continue to have these problems.

Just came across your blog via facebook. Great stuff, I knew I liked you for a reason :)

The housing bubble was complicated, was caused by failure of both sides, and has nothing to do with immigration. Health care is complicated, is primarily the fault of Republicans as Dems have attempted reform unsuccessfully twice (including current unsuccessful attempt in progress), and has nothing to do with immigration.

Anyone trying to tie the sorry state of either to immigration is only doing so to stir up the xenophobic right wingers. America is after all, perfect, so anything wrong here must naturally be the fault of the scary brown people sneaking into our country to steal our health insurance.

Them, and the liberal, communist, Marxist, Nazi, fascist Democrats of course. But their not “REAL” Americans either so thats ok.

      Bill,

Do you believe its a conscience effort to allow the immigrants to get into the country so they can work? American people are so scared of anything. Sort of like sheep. Every night something scary is thrown out there on the news, a new virus, gang of midgets stealing shrubs out of yards, etc.
Why do you think seperation of the masses is necessary for the powers that be?

Insurance…..ahhhh, “Let me make you an offer, you can’t refuse!” We are talking about the criminally inclined taking the insurance business to new heights? Oh yes…the old insurance companies used to say give them money for insurance, sooo the targeted store/business would not burn down…accidentally, of course. After extorting ,oh I mean, making enough money to send their “insurance company rich” children to Ivy League schools and other institutions of higher learning to become well educated attorneys, the old insurance companies changed their tactics from convincing others to buy their insurance products to using laws, passing bills making all insurance “mandated”, whether it is car, home, life or health insurance but the extortion process, sorry I mean insurance process is still intact. Isn’t it odd that no matter how much you make in a certain community the amount of insurance you must pay in any type of insurance is always enough to keep you oppressed?

      Bonnie,

Do you remember when Mom and Dad were able to get insurance? I remember vividly as a child that if my injury was not a serious compound fracture or a limb almost cut off, I never went to the doctor. The only time i did was a physical for sports, which only consisted of “turn your head and cough!”
To quote Chris Rock, “It shouldn’t be called inurance, it should be Just in case shit happens. If nothing happens during that year you should get some of the money back!”
Thanks for the post keep them comin
      Love you,

I am the grand-daughter of an immigrant who came through ellis island when he was only four years old. My grandfather fought for our country in WWII and the Korean War in both the Navy and the Marines. His American citizenship didn’t go through until he was in his 30′s. His military experience afforded him an outstanding education as a pharmacist and he raised 7 children with my grandmother on that income.
Our country is built on immigrants and we have tightened our laws so much that there are so few that do come here legally. And I do feel the same as you KB that illegal immigrants do the jobs we won’t and any bills they rack up are for the astronomical cost of health care they cannot pay because they don’t have any option of healthcare. I don’t see any competing for our good jobs, or taking any jobs away from us. If they are law abiding, contributing members of our society why shouldn’t there be some kind of compassion. We are America right? The melting pot, land of opportunity. The dream.
And so many do sneak across the border risking their lives believing in our dream, what so many before have acomplished. They are not to blame for our economic problems, it is the gready, selfish investors on Wall Street that did that to us. Super High Risk loans & pushing people into loans they couldn’t afford also contributed to this demise. Now hardly anyone can get a loan thanks to them and our country is in the peril it is in for that reason.

With out starting an argument about immigrants this is still a two-fold system. Some of the Somali immigrants were given…given money from the county to get bachelor degrees. They were told they would have to pay for their Masters degree themselves. This is what several of them told me themselves. They thought we were all afforded this opportunity. I do not blame them I blame a system that keeps pitting groups of people against each other. “If you keep the masses divided, they will always need an overseer” – unknown. The many immigrants that work the jobs “we” will not work most are not even getting minimum wage…but it is better than where they came from. Many work here just to send the money home where there families can live quite well with the monies they earn. I spoke to many immigrants who were instructed to stay away from all African Americans because “they- African Americans” are predominately criminals. These were their instructions as they came into our State.

  6. Great post Keith! I am the granddaughter of Mexican Immigrants. They became legal Citizens of the US, Had my dad, who married my mother and BAM Here I’ve been since 1964! I am very passionate about standing up for Human Rights. I believe in the importance of becoming educated and staying informed so that we can keep others informed and speak out against wrongs.

I applaud you keith for keeping these issues in front of us.

Here’s a quote my husband told me. It was spoken by a man named Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was a German living at the time when the Nazi’s were taking people.

“when they came for the communists…I wasn’t a communist so I said nothing. When they came for the trade unionists…I wasn’t a trade unionist so I said nothing. When they came for the catholics…I was a protestant so I said nothing. When they came for the Jews…I was a christian so I said nothing. Then, when they came for me…there was no one left to stand up for me.”

As Americans we have a very short memory. Cassandra, in our life time my parents were finally able to vote, 1968 early 1969. My father fought in WWII believing by fighting overseas he could improve the living condition for his community as many African American men and women did. This was a false hope. Unfortunately my ancestors did not travel through Ellis Island and see Lady Liberty, who is an African-French lady how ironic. I could not imagine being my age and finally able to be included in society in some way.
Immigrants keep this country going. I believe 98% of the so called “illegals” are law abiding and with bust their ass on any job they are able to obtain. Although I believe the people who hire them are no better than the slave owners because they might as well pay them with a chicken or the unwanted portians of the pig because of the low wages they are paid. The companies who hire them should be forced to pay them a fair wage and provide insurance.
      I’m jus sayin,
Thank you for the post and keep em comin :o )
